Depending on the severity of the child a Picture Exchange System (PECS)
may be necessary to transition through activities. Most moderate to
severe Special Day Classes follow a vertical PECS schedule which the
child understands that he or she must check after each activity. This
type of instruction is extremely beneficial to those children who are
between the ages of 2 and 5 years old. Incorporating this methodology
early in a child’s life allows them to transition and understand
the SDC system with minimal behavioral occurrences. When implementing
instruction we like to incorporate two facets of learning. For example,
if the child has difficulty learning sight words we can implement gross
motors skills via riding a three wheeled chariot along with writing
the words in chalk. Making a maze of sight words allows the student
to participate in gross motor and language arts at the same time. The
task at heart is decided by the parent either through an Individual
Education Plan (IEP) or by their level of importance. Assessing the
child is the first step in the process. Any collaborating with teachers,
speech pathologist and occupational therapists can substantially help
the customized tutoring process. Furthermore, it is important to understand
what the child works for. A token reinforcement system may be extremely
beneficial to ensure the utmost concentration.
Hours of instruction are available between 9am and 8pm. Hourly rates
are deciphered upon the complexity of the task, the child’s current
disability, and the amount of hours of service.
